In June 2017 two pandas, named Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, arrived at the Berlin zoo. The cute couple have been rented from China for 15 years to improve diplomatic relations between China and Germany. Pandas are animals living between 1200 and 4000 m a.s.l. (metres above sea level), thus they need special conditions. They eat about 30 kg of bamboo every day. They don’t need too much space but they have to be safe. The pavilion for the two pandas cost about 9 million euro. The pandas were even greeted by Angela Merkel. It was a big event, because in the world there are only about 2,5 thousand pandas left. Now the pandas are doing great and they are visited by about ten thousand pepole every day.
